Stories worth the detour

Underestimated. And that’s what makes it special

The Eagle Hawk Hotel in Sutton, just outside Canberra, doesn’t shout for attention. From the outside, you could easily drive past it without thinking twice.

That would be a mistake.

Inside, the fire was going, filling the room with warmth and that unmistakable smoky smell when the doors opened. It immediately set the tone. Relaxed, comfortable, the kind of place that feels better the longer you sit.

Then the steak arrived.

Incredible. Properly cooked, full of flavour, and genuinely one of the best steaks we’ve eaten in a long time. No fuss, no theatrics, just done right. The kind of meal that makes you pause mid-conversation because you’re paying attention to what’s on the plate.

Service matched it perfectly. Attentive without hovering, friendly without forcing it. Everything felt easy.

This place is underestimated. A quiet achiever. A hidden gem that doesn’t need noise to back it up.

We’d go out of our way for that steak again.

Worth the detour: Yes.
