Stories worth the detour

A place we always look forward to stopping

When we’re driving between New South Wales and Queensland, there’s one stop we genuinely look forward to. New Italy.

It’s a free, donation-based stop and every time we pull in, it’s clean, tidy, and welcoming. No chaos. No noise. Just space to breathe and reset before the next leg of the drive.

There are plenty of spots to pull over and park for the night, even with a caravan. It never feels cramped, and there’s room to settle in properly rather than just squeeze in and sleep.

It’s also dog friendly, which makes a big difference for us. There’s a dedicated dog park on site, so everyone gets a stretch, not just the humans.

What really sets New Italy apart, though, is what’s there beyond the overnight stop. The museum and café are right on site, and we always make a point of supporting them. It adds meaning to the stop. You’re not just passing through, you’re connecting with the place and its story.

This is the kind of stop that understands travellers. Simple, thoughtful, and well looked after. No fuss. No pressure. Just a genuinely good place to pause.

We’ll keep stopping here every chance we get.

Worth the detour: Yes.
